Oriental rugs actually comprise a diverse range of different rugs from areas that are separated by great geological and cultural differences. Essentially, an oriental rug can come from anywhere from Turkey to China or from Southern Russia down to the very tip of the Indian subcontinent. The particular region the rug comes from will greatly determine its style and coloration. Rugs from Muslim areas cannot depict human or animal forms, due to religious considerations, and instead depict interesting geometric and mosaic patterns which are very intricate and beautiful. More strictly Asian rugs are more likely to depict highly stylized animals and people which are typically very elongated and exaggerated. Oriental rugs can be very expensive, but the handmade quality is unmatched and they will last much longer than most modern rugs.

Contemporary rugs consist of a wide variety of different styles and designs which can be used for a variety of different areas, occasions, and styles. Seasonal rugs have become very popular and often include holiday scenes or depict seasonal colors such as fall or spring. Rugs made from sisal and other natural fibers are very popular in modern sparsely designed environments. Some advantages of modern rug designs are that they tend to be cheaper than their handmade oriental counterparts and they are much more updated and current. One disadvantage is that styles come and go and while the time-tested motifs of the orient never go out of style, a modern rug just might.

Rugs can be used anywhere in any room with any type of flooring. Though typically used on hard flooring surfaces such as wood, concrete, or cork, rugs are also frequently used even over carpeted surfaces as well. One of the first considerations you should have when choosing a rug is to consider the style of the room being used and its existing flooring surface. Oriental rugs are perhaps the most popular type of rug, especially for more traditional settings, but modern rugs made from sisal or sea grass are becoming even more popular in newer homes or remodeled areas. The design of the rug is another important consideration when selecting a rug.

Unless you are an experienced decorator with a penchant for eclectic design, the rug you choose should match the rest of the room as best as is possible. An oriental rug would look quite out of place in a room with pale hardwood flooring and sleek ultra-modern silver and black furniture. Conversely, a room with dark hardwoods and dark brown leather furniture would look equally out of place with a tan sisal rug. If you’re a beginner, its best to stick with proven formulas.

Area rugs are used to add style and comfort to the home. Especially on hard surfaces, a rug adds extra comfort and support for the feet and the rest of the body. A rug pad is a worthy investment especially for rugs placed on slippery hard floors. Rug mats not only add extra cushion to the rug and prolong its life, but they also can prevent the rug from slipping causing an accident or injury. Rug pads can also prevent the eventually leaching of colors from the rug into the surface of the floor beneath. You can protect your guests and your rug by investing in a rug mat.
